Matthias Kranebitter was born in 1980 in Vienna, Austria. He studied electro-acous- tic composition with Dieter Kaufmann and German Toro-Perez, film and media com- position with Klaus-Peter Sattler and piano with Christiane Karajeva at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He continued his studies with a postgraduate course at the Conservatory van Amster- dam as well as at the University of Graz with Alexander Stankovski and Beat Furrer.
His music is characterized by aspects of our media society, a dense accumulation and mash- up from everyday life’s trash sounds to a flittering-colourful and hyper-hetero- genic sound flood, a comic-like, grotesque distortion of clichéd musical gestures with an ironic ambivalence, aiming for a culture- liberated “Art brut” in music.
He has been awarded with the 1st Prize at the Project Young Composers Gaudeamus Music Week Amsterdam 2009, Publicity Prize of the SKE Austro Mechana 2013, Kompositionspreis der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart 2020 and the Erste Bank Kompositionspreis of Wien Modern / Klangforum Wien 2020. In 2022 he received the prestigious Ernst Krenek Preis of the City of Vienna.
In 2015 he received the scholarship of Junge Akademie of Akademie der Künste Berlin.
He has collaborated with ensembles like the Belgian Nadar Ensemble, Decoder Ensemble Hamburg, Ensemble Mosaik Berlin, Ensemble Garage Köln, Talea Ensemble New York, Ensemble Phace and Klangforum Wien.
He is founder of the ensemble Black Page Orchestra as well as one of the initiators of UNSAFE+SOUNDS FESTIVAL – antidisciplinary Festival / Media Arts Music in Vienna.
